Chaos in Green Garden and conservation consulting in Tasmania

Gardener, Horticulturalist, artist

My name is Sarah, and I am a garden and conservation consultant, an artistic creator, and a firm believer that knowledge is the most powerful seed we can plant. Based in the unique, cool climate of Tasmania, my work is centered on the idea that when we understand our local ecosystem, we can build food systems that are resilient, nutritious, and deeply connected to the land while growing community.

I believe that allowing spaces to remain wild brings us profound benefits and joy. By fostering a healthy ecosystem, we invite diverse plants, animals, and insects to thrive alongside us. I help you look at your landscape as a whole - analyzing soil health, pest pressures, and optimum growing conditions - to understand what your land is, how it has changed over the past, and what it can become in the future.

Roots and Knowledge

I am striving to be the person I needed five years ago. My journey is driven by a desire to turn my personal impact into a positive force for change. With Certificates in Horticulture and Conservation and Ecosystem Management, combined with extensive reading into soils, biochar, fungi, and seed saving, I have built a toolkit of knowledge designed for the specific challenges of our Tasmanian landscape.

My Philosophy: Regenerative and Local

I do not just see a garden; I see a web of life. My approach is rooted in Regenerative Horticulture and Integrated Pest Management, focusing on organic processes that heal the soil from the ground up.

  • Plant choices: With an interest in "edimental" (edible and ornamental) gardening - using Tasmanian native plants and hardy edibles to create spaces that are as beautiful as they are productive.
  • Soil health and biochar: I am passionate about soil health. Currently, my favorite pursuit is transforming excess leaf litter into biochar - reducing fire risk while creating a permanent "battery" for soil nutrients.
  • Climate-specific wisdom: Success depends on understanding your microclimate and the unique capabilities of your soil - its texture, makeup, and pH. I focus on plants that are locally adapted, requiring fewer resources and offering higher resilience.

Building Resilience in a Changing Climate

Our environment is shifting, and our gardens must adapt. I focus on building Climate Resilience to help your land withstand the extremes - whether it is the pressure of drought, the risk of fire, or the impact of heavy rains. By improving soil structure for better water infiltration and selecting the right species for the right spot, I can guide you to create a landscape that does not just survive these changes but thrives through them.

Power to the People

Knowledge should not be a gatekept secret; it is a community asset. I see this website as a conduit to share the "gems" I have collected. Food security is community security. When we share seeds, plants, and knowledge, we remove the strain from our fragile food systems and grow stronger together.

How We Can Work Together

I work with you exactly where you are - no matter your current experience level.

  • Consultations: Available at a flat hourly rate for on-site visits and tailored advice on soil conditions, microclimates, and plant selection.
  • Open resources: My reading lists and digital resources are not behind a paywall. I want you to have access to the same information that formed my views.
  • Biochar demonstrations: If you have leaf litter and want to learn how to turn waste into "black gold," get in touch. I can run a demonstration to show you how to reduce fire risk while building soil health.

In times of uncertainty, we are stronger when we band together. Let's grow something meaningful.
