Cleared an under-utilised area of the garden that was becoming overgrown with ivy. We built an L-shaped garden bed with treated sleeper edges, secured with pegs, then laid cardboard to suppress grass and weeds. The bed was filled with soil, planted with natives to harmonise with the surrounds, and topped with the client's existing on-site pine bark to save on costs.
This low maintenance garden has given us so much joy. It was made in the Hugelkultur (moisture-wicking) style by adding large wood logs to the base of the plastic-lined bed to hold moisture. This was then topped with dirt, green matter, manure, compost, and pea straw. It was planted with herbs and garden greens and has given us great returns for the past few years with little to no maintenance other than a soil top-up and some thinning out of greens that have gone a bit mad.
Every year my dad Johan Mets creates a wooden structure from reclaimed wood and pallets which is ceremonially set fire to at the Longley International Hotel in winter. For the past few years I have been involved in helping him design and build the structures, which fit in with my recycle and reuse ethos, as well as my desire to build something for the community. This series is a documentary of the construction journey.
This year's crazy burning project was an Egyptian-themed event. There was a sphinx, a pyramid, a Cleopatra's Needle, and of course a Stargate to enable us to travel there! We were lucky enough to have Jules play a bespoke piece of music on his cello at the start, and I was able to do some fire poi, which is another of my loves.

This year was a Star Wars/Galactic theme where there was an R2D2, 2 x AT-AT walkers, a Darth Vader, an Ewok Village, and a speed camera for good measure. We had a speeder flying out of a tree and crashing into the scene to start the whole thing off with a bang.
